Don Bluth's crowning achievement is Fox's first in house production. Brilliantly animated, superbly acted, with an exciting adult story line is Fox's "Anastasia." Loosely based on the legend of the youngest daughter of the last Tzar of Russia (her rumored survival when the Romanov family was executed), Bluth (with co-director, Gary Goldman) introduces us to the magical world of NON-Disney film making at it's very finest.
From it's opening prologue, narrated by the Dowager Empress, Marie (Angela Lansburry), and the curse by Christopher Lloyd's Rasputin, we are told that we're not in Disneyland anymore. This is a far far better film that the mouse has ever made. And Disney knows it too (Why else would they show "The Little Mermaid" for only a few short weeks and then cowering in fear?).
